The City's first elections took place in November 2001. Winners took office in January 2002. The Mayor began a four-year term and the Council Members with the highest number of votes in each district held office for a four year term. Those having the second-highest number of votes held office for a two-year term.
This created staggered terms for Council Members in each District that continues today. So, Centennial Council Members have a four year term, but they are not all elected at the same time. We hold elections every two years for one of Council seats in each District. Elections take place in odd years, and outgoing and newly elected positions commence in even years.
