Driver and Pedestrian Safety

The City has received some resident concerns regarding driver behavior and pedestrian safety on Monaco between Dry Creek and Phillips, especially around pedestrian access to the community pool from the western half of the neighborhood since Monaco divides the neighborhood.

After assessing conditions on this critical neighborhood collector road, the City is pleased to share that we’re moving forward with a project that will make some positive and significant changes to the overall feel and experience on Monaco from Dry Creek to Phillips. Since Monaco is so wide, we will be installing new pavement markings to better delineate the roadway space for the different users of the roadway including parked vehicles, cyclists, and drivers – this should both visually narrow the travel lanes of the roadway and potentially provide an associated traffic calming effect.

Along with that, we will be installing new ADA ramps and a new marked enhanced crossing of Monaco at Mineral Ave that will be equipped with pushbutton-activated Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) – with the lane line striping in place on Monaco the exposed pedestrian crossing distance will effectively decrease to 20’ from 44’.

Finally, we will be installing a new section of sidewalk on the west side of Monaco between Mineral Ave and Mineral Dr to complete that missing connection so that residents south of Mineral Ave will also be able to access the new enhanced crosswalk facility.

We are currently coordinating scheduling for the different components of the project (concrete, striping, signage) outlined above – the RRFB materials are already on order and we are awaiting their arrival.   We are targeting to hopefully have full completion of the modifications by the first week of June, in time for the end of school and the beginning of the summer (pool) season.

The striping on Monaco will start at Dry Creek and look like the above all the way down to between Mineral Dr and Mineral Pl, where the roadway narrows and it will then look like this the rest of the way down to Phillips:
