Yard Sign Community Education Program

Drive like your dog lives here.

To support and raise awareness of traffic related safety in Centennial’s neighborhoods, the City has initiated a Yard Sign Community Education program, available annually from April 15 until November 15. This program encourages neighbors to work with neighbors to raise awareness and provide a gentle reminder to drivers encouraging them to slow down. This can be done by temporarily placing safety messaging signs, provided by the City, in a series of yards.

The program requires yard signs to be placed in multiple yards (minimum three yards but greater numbers on a single segment are encouraged) for a short period of time. The novelty and visual impact of a row of temporary signs can help re-focus active attention and awareness, which enhances safe driving behaviors. To retain the novelty of the visual impact of the signs and to provide opportunity for multiple neighborhoods to participate, deployments within the same or similar areas of a single neighborhood will be limited.

Who can apply for the program and how?

The program is open to Centennial residents who reside in a single-family residence with an unfenced front or side yard adjacent to a Centennial roadway. Multifamily residences or other conditions may be considered by staff for eligibility per request. Yards adjacent to arterial roadways (such as Dry Creek, County Line, Arapahoe, Colorado, Holly, Jordan, Himalaya, Smoky Hill, etc.) are not eligible for this program.

To participate, a resident needs to:

  • Complete a yard sign program application which includes signatures of neighbors along the same segment of roadway to indicate support and permission for the sign to be placed in their yards
  • Return the completed application for review at least two weeks prior to the desired sign deployment date
  • If approved, coordinate a day and time to pick up the requested number of yard signs from Centennial Public Works (7272 S Eagle St)
  • Work with the consenting neighbors to deploy the yard signs on the approved sign deployment date
  • Retrieve all yard signs at the end of the approved sign deployment time period (typically 7-10 days)
  • Return all yard signs to Public Works within three business days after the conclusion of the approved sign deployment time period

Program Rules and Expectations

Program Rules

This program is available to Centennial residents between April 15 and November 15.

The City is responsible for approving the application and the yard signs that will be deployed with the application.

Yard signs available under this program are limited. Applications will be considered on a first come, first served basis.

The period of each deployment of yard signs will be set by the City but will not last more than 10 days.

All yard sign packages must be returned to the City within the specified three business days following conclusion of a deployment period.

The City will not accept applications for the same area of a neighborhood, for a minimum of 30 days after the last deployment period in that area.

Prior to the Yard Sign Deployment Period

  • Complete an application with resident signatures authorizing yard sign placements in at least three yards.
  • Applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to the date requested on the application. Please note, due to limited number of yard signs, the requested date may not be available.
  • The City reviews and approves applications and will set the start and end dates.

  • Signs may only be placed for the duration of the deployment period approved by the City.
  • Signs may only be placed in the yards of those residents who gave permission by signing the application.
  • Defaced or damaged yard signs must be removed immediately and then returned to the City with the rest of the yard sign package.
