Yard Sign Guidelines

While yard signs are a great way to get the message out, these are the specific guidelines that residents must follow to ensure compliance with the City of Centennial Land Development Code and signage guidelines.


All temporary signs are prohibited on:

  • Public property, and in or projecting above public rights-of-way
  • Traffic control signals, sign posts or similar structures
  • Utility poles, cabinets and telephone poles
  • Medians and center islands
  • Retaining walls and fences
  • Trees and shrubs
  • Sidewalks
  • Property within 30 feet from the edge of the curb along principal corridors

Standards for yard signs:

  • Maximum sign area allowed is 6 square feet per sign; and 24 square feet per lot. For example, six yard signs, each being 4 square feet, are allowed on a single lot
  • Maximum sign height allowed is 4 feet

There are no restrictions on when the sign can be placed, or must be removed, other than those listed above.

Paper or cardboard sign face  Signs must be removed within 24 hours of placement; signs may be placed not more than 90 days per year 
Laminated papers, plastic lined polyethylene bags and comparable materials  Signs may be places for not more than 90 days per year
Wood, corrugated plastic, metal or vinyl sign face Signs may be places for not more than 120 days per year 

Public right-of-way

Public right-of-way is held in the public's interest by the City and is intended for the accommodation of traffic movements, utilities, drainage and other similar public uses.

Signs must be placed 30 feet from a principal corridor and not in the public right-of-way.

Exceptions to the 30-foot rule:

  • Where the front yard of any residentially zoned or a single family lot connects to any principal corridor
  • Where a private fence, wall or other structure clearly outlines the boundary of private property that borders the public right-of-way
  • Signs posted on a private property by a school, homeowners association (HOA), civic association or special district

Setbacks by Zoning District:

All yard signs must be set back at least 5 feet from all property lines.

Standards specific to Education, Institutional and Recreation (ED) and Public Open Space and Recreation (OSR) Zoning Districts:

  • Two yard signs are allowed at the entry and/or exit location(s) of the proposed development
  • Maximum sign area allowed is 6 square feet per sign
  • Maximum sign height allowed is 4 feet

Standards specific to Agricultural Zoning District:

  • Maximum sign area allowed is 6 square feet per sign; and 36 square feet per lot. For example, six yard signs, each being 6 square feet, are allowed on a single lot
  • Maximum sign height allowed is 5 feet
